Season 2 of Harry Strange...

...is almost underway. We are about 90% cast for the first 6 episodes so if you know someone who wants to do a little voice acting, send them this way.

This Sunday we do the table reads of 201-206. It's very exciting. This season feels a little odd because I know folks are listening. When we recorded S1, we hadn't any idea if anyone would listen. I am happy to say that many of you did: a couple hundred or so on the radio stream and another ~850 download each episode of the pod. Not bad for mostly word of mouth advertising and the 'Sigler Bump.'

So now that we know your listening and, based on the email I receive, enjoying the show, the pressure is on to perform better in S2. Will we? I think so. But we are counting on you to keep us honest.

Voice Actor Casting Call for the Harry Strange Radio Drama

aAn open casting call for Season 2 (episodes 1-6) of the audio-drama Harry Strange is underway. Casting includes primary characters as well as secondary characters appearing the first six episodes.

Harry Strange is a weekly radio drama stylized on the classic radio dramas of the 40s and 50s playing against a contemporary backdrop. It that tells the tale of a private investigator whose beat takes him into the supernatural. Set in the town of Night Falls, Harry fights demons, elder gods, vampires and the occasional renegade priest. The show is up for several awards and currently airs on two college stations in the US and a nostalgia radio station in Canada. Weekly episodes are also available as free downloads on iTunes, the Blackberry Directory, and other rss aggregators.

Compensation is in credit and samples. Completed audio CDs will be given to the cast and crew at the end of the of the season.

Preferences are for local (Atlanta/Cobb) area performers, but all recordings will be considered. Recording sessions will be held at Kennesaw State University (Kennesaw, GA) on Sundays from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. The first session is July 31 and runs through September 11 (with a week off for Labor Day/Dragon*Con).

Radio horror serial launching January 30

January 30 marks the return of serialized radio drama to the Atlanta airwaves. Kennesaw State University radio (www.ksuradio.com) will begin airing Harry Strange, a radio serial stylized on the classic radio dramas of the 40s and 50s but playing against a contemporary backdrop.

“We’re excited and thrilled to be bringing this style of radio back to the airwaves,” said Reggie Joseph, General Manager of the student run radio station. “This type of experimental programming is what people expect from college radio. We are happy to be the ones to give it to them.”

The story, written by Tony Sarrecchia, centers on Harry Strange, a private investigator whose beat is the supernatural and paranormal. “If you’re a fan of Supernatural, Buffy/Angel or Doctor Who, you’ll enjoy Harry Strange,” Sarrecchia said.

In addition to playing on KSU radio, the episodes will be available on iTunes as free downloads. At the end of Season 1, there will be a DVD release for sale featuring interviews with the actors and behind the scenes footage.

Featured in the cast are Kellen Stennett (1940’s Radio Show, The Hobbit) Sylvia Galan (The Fat Boy Chronicles, Mad Money), Tisch Cistrunk-Parmelee (Aether Age anthology, The Voice), Parisa Johnston (Everything's For Sale, Final Etiquette), Jason Tyler (Fast Fixes HGTV, The Signal) and others.

Is it 2011 already?

Holy year-gone-by, it’s 2011 already!

When did this happen? It seems like just yesterday my kids were starting school and now they are both out. Damn. Guess it’s time to start eating dinner at 4:00 and listening to the mellow oldies station. Or not.

Last year was a good year—we recorded all the episodes of the Harry Strange Radio Drama. I started a screenplay on a Strangeverse related character and a stage play of Mr. Strange himself. I attended my first Goddess Party and met many cool and creative folks. And I think 2011 is going to be even better. Harry Strange will be debuting on-air very soon (see how I tease you) and I believe big things will follow.

This month will be busy busy busy but I will continue to update twitter (follow me at http://twitter.com/#!/tonythescribe) and our Facebook page (which you should like here: http://www.harrystrange.com/) with happenings. Look for an excerpt of the script for episode 1 of Harry Strange to be released later this week and then the announcement of the launch date shortly after that.

Tony Sarrecchia, on behalf of the Harry Strange radio drama is please to announce Breanne Ahearn joins the team as a soundscape engineer.

"I'm already hooked on the story," Ms. Ahearn said after editing the first episode. "This is a fun and exciting project to be involved with."

Ms. Ahearn joins Creator/Show Runner Tony Sarrecchia as a permanent production team member.

"Bre is a great addition to the team,” Mr. Sarrecchia said. “She brings strong audio mixing and award winning production skills."

Ms. Ahearn is the 2010 BEA (Broadcast Education Association) award winner in the category of Specialty Program and Audio Production for a short audio documentary on the 2001 Santana High School shooting and peer young adult bully titled "Innocence Lost".

She is a North San Diego native who never expected to work in the entertainment industry when she started out in college radio at KGFN Grossmont College Radio. While there, she won several awards including Best Station Promo as well as Division Honoree within the Communications and the Fine Arts departments two years in a row.

“I decided to move to Atlanta to further my career in news television media and am currently a Senior at Kennesaw State University where I direct productions for Owl Radio.”

Harry Strange is a serialized audio play in the style of the radio dramas of the 1940s and 50s set against contemporary backdrop. The story follows the adventures of Harry Strange, a private investigator and his supernatural encounters. The series is scheduled to begin airing on Kennesaw State University Owl radio (www.ksuradio.com) in January 2011.

I am thankful for the number of folks who auditioned for the first 5 episodes of Harry Strange. I need to get cracking on them. There are a lot of talented folks out there, and if you aren't selected for one these episodes, don't be surprised if you are offered a part in one the future episodes (there are 15 of them for season one).

He had cut their eyelids off so they would always have to see him and watch what he was doing to his newest toy.

They said he liked to go out to the park, find people who were making out. He always tried to kill the guy first--cut off his head. Then he would drag the girl back to his house and...play with her...awhile.

I’ve been working. No, seriously, I have. Stop laughing.

I am working on a serial drama harking back to the old days of entertainment when, rather than sitting back and watching the pretty colors, consumers of said entertainment had to get more involved. I am talking about what is often stodgily referred to as ‘Old Time Radio’. That moniker is accurate enough, but it seems to me that it brings up visions of 1930’s advertisements for Orange Crush soft drink and zoot suit wearing hipsters.

I prefer Classic Radio Entertainment. What the best CRE did was offer its listeners the chance to participate in some cerebral calisthenics whilst entertaining them with characters who became (and, in many cases still are) part of our collective consciousness. CRE demanded listener investment.

All this leads to my project. For the last few years I’ve been working on a radio drama that is part 1930’s style detective noir, part X-files, and part Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It wasn’t until the last half of last year that I decided it was time to move forward on Harry, start a new project, or give up on the dream of being a fiction writer. I opted to move forward-with the bulk of the episodes being written between November 2009 and January 2010.

Harry is a private eye-type character in the Philip Marlowe ilk. But Harry is more than what he seems. In the first episode, he witnesses a man being turned inside out. Later episodes feature Harry doing battle with Lovecraftian fiends and demons of all flavors.

I wrote Harry Strange in audio-play format and, very soon, I will start auditioning actors interested in doing voice-over work. Yep, I am going to self-produce it. Before that though, I will be asking a few folks (probably about 3-5) to critique the scripts for the first season (15 episodes). I am rereading them in the next few weeks to tease-up themes and back-stories that occurred without my conscious design. If you want to be a cool script critique volunteer email me now. So, that’s what I’ve been doing since Christmas. Well, that and non-fiction political stuff, but we don’t want to talk about all that. If you follow my tweets you’ll know that from time to time the political-obsessive-compulsive (POC) I share my brain with takes over and starts spouting all sorts of anarcho-capitalist libertarian constitutionalist beliefs. If you’re not following me on Twitter, feel free to do so; I promise I try to keep the POC in line. :)

I am often suspicious of the ‘experts’ who tout their method of writing, especially when their pedigree seems to be primarily start-up/now-gone companies, publications that are little more than glorified sales sheets, or contain the word ‘guru’. In fact, a sure to guarantee that I will not follow you, but I will also block you on Twitter is to have the words marketing, sales, or social media guru too close together. But I digress.

This writing FAQ is written by James Moran , a film and television writer who’s credits include: the horror flick Severance; as well sci-fi favorites Doctor Who (the current series, not the classic—the dude isn’t that old), Torchwood as well as some others. Based on his blog, Moran seems like a very down to earth fellow and puts a human face on ‘the writer’. Because of some ugliness of fans around the Torchwood: Children of Earth mini-series, Moran has stopped updating his blog but, thankfully, he’s left it up for others to read his nuggets of wisdom and silliness.

The post that I am linking to is one of the more thorough writing FAQs from someone in the industry. Moran is specific that this was his experience and your mileage may vary. He talks about the way to break-in (‘it’s hard, but doable’) writing schedules, why you shouldn’t write a spec episode for your favorite show, as well some geeky behind the scenes stuff about Doctor Who and Torchwood.

Wait, another freaking blog????

Yeah, I know. I labored over the decision to start yet another blog. I mean, I have the cartoon blog, the radio show blog, and the editorial blog (well, technically, that is actually a column, but why quibble over the little details). Then, once you add in Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and (Lord help us) Plurk—I appear to be quite the narcissist. Hmmm. One should be careful before drawing conclusions in public. Anyway---so why another freaking blog?

Well this blog serves a compartmental purpose. In the movie Dreamcatcher, several scenes take place in the main character’s brain. His mind looks much like a musty library of old—complete with boxes labeled ‘old memories’ and ‘masturbatory fantasies’. In addition, there are rows and rows of books, secret passages, and filing cabinets. That is pretty much how my brain works. Different compartments for everything. This is my fiction compartment.

I am a writer that is what I do. Everything, even the cartoons, revolve around my ability to tell a story. And that, dear readers, is what this blog will be about. I house my serious writing in the aforementioned elsewheres: and I am pleased that some of you enjoy reading and bantering with me on the content of the ‘serious’ stuff. I hope that you will be just as enthusiastic here in the land of make-believe. Truth be told, I find this land much more fulfilling than the land of health care, bailouts and partisan pissing contests. I hope you do as well. Understand that I am not leaving those other areas (I am far too opinionated for that) but I will be spending more time here than I have in the past.

Over the next few days and weeks, I will be posting some work that I hope you take the time to read and comment. I am very excited about one series that I plan to produce as a podcast (with actors and everything) and post here for your aural pleasure as you drive to and from the corporate behemoth, the place of knowledge, or just truckin' the tykes to play dates.
